Generation 9/11 for Time Magazine “The End Of Bin Laden” issue
Last week I was very fortunate to get a call from Time Photo Editor Natalie Matutschovsky to shoot for the magazine’s “The End of Bin Laden” issue. The call came just a few days after the news broke about Osama Bin Laden’s death at the hands of a band of U.S. Navy Seals. I’ve worked for Time before mostly shooting images of regionally important people but to have my work included in a special issue that also includes the work of photographers like Joel Meyerowitz, Nachtwey and good friend Andy Cutraro is a great feeling.
The concept was to photograph several of the now-teenaged students from Emma E. Booker elementary school in Sarasota who were in the presence of President George W. Bush when he received the news the nation had been attacked on Sept. 11, 2001. The students, then in second grade, were reading to the President when an aide stepped into the room to inform him of the attacks. Each student I photographed talked about the connection they felt with President Bush and the killing of Bin Laden.
I was on the tightest deadline I’ve ever worked under in my years as an editorial photographer. I had to photograph the students (at two different locations) and transmit an edit to Time’s NYC office by 3 pm and then produce final selects an hour later so that the story could meet the magazine’s deadline of Wednesday evening. I was literally editing and sending while my assistant was breaking down the second set. My years of working as a newspaper photojournalist on tight deadlines comes in handy every so often.
Here’s the layouts from the magazine – I was stoked at how well Time Director of Photography Kira Pollack and Natalie took care of my work!
